About the project

The PRIM project (Podpora rozvoje informatického myšlení – Support of development of computational thinking) responds to increasing necessity both IT experts and general education of population in informatics area. The project also responds to similar activities in a lot of developed countries in which computational thinking comes to the forefront in schools and natinal curricula creators. The project is targeted to all school grades from kindergarten to secondary schools. All faculties of education in the Czech republic and National pedagogical institute participate in the project. The guarantee of the project is Faculty of Education, University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice.

The PRIM project has been crucial in the transformation of information and communications technology (ICT) education in the Czech Republic. The main goal is to change from a purely user-oriented approach to include the basics of computer science, and the PRIM project has to prepare the conditions for these changes in the field of computer science. Among other things, the PRIM project has to create educational materials that cover the new computer science curriculum for all school levels; from kindergarten to upper high school.

Twelve new textbooks have been created in the frame of the PRIM project (published at https://imysleni.cz/ucebnice). Part of them are textbooks for programming in Scratch for primary and lower secondary, followed by the textbook for programming in Python for upper-secondary schools. Along with the textbooks on algorithmization and programming, textbooks of “unplugged computer science” were also created in which pupils are introduced to topics such as modeling, coding, information systems, and working with the data by taking part in unplugged activities and solving Bebras challenge contest tasks. Another area covered by these textbooks is the basics of robotics in which the youngest play with the robotic toys Bee-bot, and the older ones with robotic building sets (Lego WeDo, Mindstorms) or with embedded systems such as Micro: bit or Arduino.

Other project objectives are:

  • to create a system of in-service teachers of informatics preparation including primary and pre-primary teachers in basics of programming, informatics and informatics education,
  • to create unified system of pre-service teachers preparating at all fakulties of education containing compulsory subjects of informatics field and its didactics,
  • to reach the public with popularization campaigns that should attract attention and tune the society more favorably to IT professions and significantly influence the change of the negative attitude in the society towards technical professions.

Duration if the project: 10/2017 – 09/2020
